Victor's Collectible Ornament
"Bit of History" series
Simonds Cobblestone Store
The Simonds Cobblestone Store was built in 1834 by Nathan Jenks. The Greek Revival cobblestone landmark is built with all sides constructed with four rows of stone to the quoin (cornerstone) - an unusual feature in cobblestone masonry. Albert Simonds began as a clerk in Jenks' Dry Goods Store and became a partner in 1837 when Nathan Jenks retired. A. Simonds and Sons Dry Goods remained in the Simonds family as a general store with Albert's two sons, George and Lewis succeeding their father as the next proprietors. In 1912, Lewis' son, Russell, began working in the cobblestone store and became a partner in 1912. For over 130 years the Simonds Store was a general store which remained in the family until it was sold in 1967.
